For example-
*Gabryella for Gabriella
*Mariam for Miriam
*Delaynie for Delaney
*Brinna for Brenna
*Rebekah for Rebecca
*Aleksander for Alexander
Opinons, please?
Do you prefer the traditional or unusual spelling of a name, as a general rule?
Generally I prefer the traditional spelling because it's so much trouble having to spell unusual names every day for people, and having it spelled wrong on forms and needing to correct it.
Reply:As a general rule, I prefer the traditional spellings. They are less likely to get mispronounced or misspelled, and it's always a drag to go through life feeling that your name is misspelled. However, there are some cases where I prefer the unique spelling. For example, I prefer Kaitlyn over Caitlin, because the 'K' just looks prettier to me as does the -lyn ending, although that's just me. But for most names, I prefer the traditional spelling - "Sierra" just looks better than "Ciera" or something to me.
I also think that it depends on how unique the respelling is. I mean, for Gabryella / Gabriella - I think Gabryella looks awfully mispelled, because it just doesn't look right that way. But Gabriela is pretty (not that I personally would use it, but I think that if it were only like that then I could consider an unusual spelling).
Reply:Honestly, it depends on the name. For all of your examples, I like the traditional...I will name some I like the names spelled different:
Brittany - Brittni
Kaylee - Kayli (I honestly don't know what the traditional spelling is)
Annabelle - Anabelle (1 n)
Just a couple examples... But usually, as a general rule, I would go traditional MYSELF, but any spelling is fine with me. It is the person who makes it unique
Reply:Depends on the name. My daughter's name is Anicah (sounds like Monica w/o the M). The traditional spelling is Anika. But I worried people would say Aneeka. So we changed the spelling.
And my older child is Jocelynn...traditional spelling is Joceline, or with just the one N. My husband liked the second N b/c my middle name is Lynn.
I LIKE Rebekah %26amp; Aleksander (%26amp; considered Aleksander if I had a boy last time). The other names are a little convoluted. Sort of like you changed it just for the sake of changing it...remember, your child will have to spell it themselves when they start Kindergarten...will it confuse them too much? Or will they have to CONSTANTLY correct people with the spelling of their name?
Reply:It depends. Sometimes, the traditional spelling is bland, or resembles a word you wouldn't want it to resemble, etc. Sometimes the "traditional spelling" is only a traditional spelling in some places (i.e. in Russia Victoria is always Viktoriya). SO yeah, it depends.
Out of those I like Rebekah and Brinna, that's it.
Reply:I really don't like some of those spellings....sorry. It's just that at some point...it stops looking like the name it is supposed to be. Like I look at Gabryella and I think "Gabr-yell-a" until I realize..."No, Gabriella". So, as a general rule, I prefer traditional spelling...to an extent. There are some names, like Lin (Lyn, Lynn) that all of them make sense to me. Or Cara vs. Kara, but they look like they are supposed to sound...If that makes sense.
I know someone who spells his name "Allekzandr". Ugh. It seriously takes people a couple seconds to pronounce it.
Reply:I like the traditional spellings. They look more professional. Misspelling the names doesn't make them more unique. The kids are gonna have to spell their names out for people all the time and it is annoying.
I don't mind Rebekah instead of Rebecca though since that's how it is spelled in the bible, but the rest I like spelled the correct way.
Reply:I like spellings that are not common but to extent. My daughters name is Karli. The reason I chose the spelling instead of Karlee or Karly is because my name is Kelly. Everyone always asks me if it is with an "i" or a "y". I always wished it was with an "i". I figured I would give her the "i" because they are going to ask anyway. I hate names that are spelled so weird you can not pronounce them like Rhys for Reece. It looks funny and misspelled.
Reply:In most names, I like the unusual spelling. I don't care how many people say it wrong or spell it wrong, it's still THE CHILD'S NAME.
Like, Brenna, I would spell it Brynna.
And, I like Lukas instead of Lucas, Mikah instead of Micah, Carli or Carlee instead of Carly, etc.
:]
Reply:It depends on the name really. Like my daughter her name is Andrea and I prefer the normal spelling on that. My son is Nicholas and I like the normal spelling on that one. My new baby girl's name is Alyzabeth instead of Elizabeth. I love the way that I spelled it.
Reply:I think it just depends on the name. Many of the names you have listed, I would prefer the traditional spelling on most. But there are some names out there that I would prefer unique spelling.
Reply:I prefer traditional spellings generally. I can't think how annoying it would be having to spell your name the whole time. There are a few exceptions I think, but I think that unique names generally look tackier. Why change something that's good already?
Reply:I usually like the more unsual spelling except in the case of Alexander. I hate Aleksander and Alekzander. I just cant get used to it for some reason. The other are all the same to me
Reply:Rebekah is actually the traditional biblical spelling, while Rebecca is the traditional English spelling.
I like the traditional spelling of a name. I think other spellings are just ridiculous.
Reply:I like the traditional spellings. The unusual spellings just make it seem like you couldn't spell the name and will often be misspelt and mispronounced. Spellings like Aleksander just seem weird!
Reply:Depends
for example
i would hate Jessica to be spelt Jesykah
but for the name Olivia i wouldnt mind Alivia
i like i dont like Peighton compared to Peyton but Mikayla is nice versus Michaela
Reply:I love traditional spellings for names.
I think different spellings other than the original spelling is trashy %26amp; ugly. They look awful.
Reply:Traditional 150%
So the second spelling for each of your names.
I feel that traditional spelling seems more timeless than the trendy and unusual spelling
Reply:I prefer traditional, if for no other reason to protect the child from a situation he or she didn't create.
Reply:I like traditional of names
I think misspelling names is mean, and the poor child will have to spell their name to everyone
Reply:I prefer traditional spellings. There is nothing useful or interesting about misspelling a name.
Reply:It depends on the name and how unusual the spelling is.
Reply:i like the traditional way better...but i like the way u spelled Rebekah♥
Reply:Gabriella
Mariam
Delaney
Brenna
Rebecca
Alexander
Those are the spelling's I prefer...
~_~
Reply:Traditional.
Reply:i like the traditional spellings.
Reply:I like the unique names, the different spellings are more personal
Reply:definently unusual!
(:
Reply:I like unusual spellings...Like:
Khloe
Courtne
Kourtney
Ali
Lexe
:)
Reply:I would just use the normal spellings. YThey are so much easier for the child, if not then theybwill always be saying "It's R-E-B-E-K-A-H, not R-E-B-E-C-C-A"
Reply:I actually like unusual spelling of names, though!
