If you have an "ordinary" name, did you choose odd or unusual names for your children ?

...or potential children? Basically it's supposed to be that a mother with a common name will be more likely to pick rare names for her children. This might be due to the fact that she felt her name was boring or too popular growing up. The inverse is also thought to be true.

If you have an "ordinary" name, did you choose odd or unusual names for your children ?
Well my name is Lily (the name I go by being my middle name not my first name) and up until now I didn't know many Lily's. Now its becoming really popular but I love my name! My first name is really popular also but I really hate it. And yes I'm giving my daughter and ordinary name her name will be Alyssa it's 14th in the USA but I Love that name and it being 14th isn't going to change my mind!
Reply:There's probably some truth to that saying. I've got an ordinary common name (Elizabeth), and although I do like plenty of the popular names, I think I most likely would choose something slightly out of the ordinary.

Not that there's anything wrong with having an ordinary name or anything; I just think a rarer name carefully chosen helps someone to feel special.

Also I married someone with an uncommon surname, and my husband likes a lot of unusual names (he doesn't automatically go "Ooh that's too weird"), and that may help me feel like we can do something a little different.

I do remember when I was at school, there were three sisters called Zanthe, Zarina and Zelda. I asked what their parents' names were: Wayne and Faye.
Reply:My name is Renee, my kids are JR (Julian Rashaad) and Kiah.

I think think mine and my sons names are classic or common but Kiah is more unique but gaining popularity. (pronounced like pie-ya but with K)

I had never heard of it until I named her that and now people are like oh my friends daughters name is Kiah. Theres a TV show now too with a singer named Kiah but spelled Kaya. Theres also a bob marley song called Kaya.

Its an african princesses name meaning spring time, dawn, new beginning.
Reply:My name is Emily, very VERY common. But once I get the chance to have kids, I don't think I'll be using unusual names or ordinary names, but a mixture of both. Like these:

Anthony Cale

Wesley James

Gabriel Lee

Olivia Lynn

Ella Marie

Felicia Ann

I don't think you can really group ALL of those names into either "unusual" or "ordinary", so I don't feel this applys to me.
Reply:i choose names for my kids that i think will suit them. if its normal or unique, that part doesn't really matter to me.

so many people now are giving their kids "unique" names and pretty soon normal names like lucas, logan, and steven are going to be the unique names.

my name is Kira and my sons are Logan and Lucas.
Reply:My name is Clare, the names I like aren't overly out there, but my name is very common, so yeah. Names I like are Lucy, Allison, Laila, Sophia, Karen, Lily, Pearl, Isabella and Rose for girls, and names like Nolan, Charlie, Aidan, James, Carlisle, Ryan and Weston for boys.
Reply:im 13 %26amp; my name is Ashton %26amp; there is 4 other girls in my grade at my school named that its the most popular name for a girl at my school so I tend to like rare names!!! This is what i want to name my kids one day:

Aria Nicole Caroline

Emmy Isabella Juliet

Cruz Alexander
Reply:My name is ranked in the 500's for top baby names (it's not Lexi like my avatar)...

My favorite baby name is ranked in the 200's... which is Kira.

So I like more common names, but not names that are in the top 10 baby names. Those top 10 names are very pretty, but too common.
Reply:Well, my name is Hannah, pretty basic and simple but not too popular as I was growing up. I used to really like unique and strange names (Phoenix, Stryker and Rumer) but now I like more unusual but still proper names (Lilly, Lucas, Helena, Skye, Travis).
Reply:um well hmmm

Reply:Well, I find my name boring, but it isn't extremely common. [Marisa.]

I would love an outgoing name to match my personality, but if I have kids their names will be uncommon, but not unusual.
Reply:My name is Amber - very, very popular when I was growing up. Had two other Amber's besides me in all my class in high school, hated it!

Reply:my name is BHARTHI

i would name my kids a name that is easier to pronounce
Reply:Yes, my husband and I both had fairly popular names. His is Brian (in the top 10 the year he was born) and mine is Emily (in the top 30 the year I was born). We are hoping to give our children less common names -- nothing in the top 100 or 200.

Under consideration are names like Clara, Sonia, Susannah, Ivy, Eliza, Gwendolen, Miriam, Julius, Miles, Gideon, Jude, Kenneth, and Alasdair.

I have seen this pattern a lot. My mother had a common name for her birth year (Joyce was in the top 30) and she tried to give us uncommon names. (My sister is Melody, and at the time I was born she didn't realize how popular Emily was getting.)

My husband's grandparents had odd names that no one could ever spell right (they were Wilbert and Floris, but people always heard them as Wilbur and Florence, which were much more popular at the time). As a result, they named all their daughters with very popular names that everyone was likely to spell correctly (Ruth, Evelyn, and Barbara).

I think parents do try to "correct" in their children's names whatever problems they had with their own names, but it doesn't always have to do with popularity. My mother-in-law hated that her first, middle, and last name were one-syllable, so her main concern was with giving her children longer first and middle names that wouldn't sound so choppy.

Very interesting question! You get a star.
Reply:Well, yeah, I guess so. I didn't really think I was doing it for that reason, but I do catch myself critiquing baby names in this forum a lot based on their popularity. I just did it with the name Haylee, warning the mother-to-be that Hailey is #23 in popularity, and it's still the same name.

So obviously my name is Rebecca. Not so popular now, but #17 the year I was born. I like it, but I would like it a lot more if I didn't know 20 more Rebeccas. I used to be an active member of tribe.net, and I belonged to not one but TWO tribes that were just for women named Rebecca! Insane. There was about a hundred of us in each tribe. How totally lame.

For my 1st child I came up with Charlotte Grace. She is 13 now, and these names are getting way too popular for my tastes, but they were no where near this popular when I named her this 13 years ago. She is still the only Charlotte in her entire school, and she likes it that way. She laughs about "The Sarah Club," a large group of girls at her school who are all named Sarah (the #1 name the year she was born), and she is grateful that I did not name her Sarah. I considered that name before I found out how popular it is, and I am happy that I ditched it.

Pregnant with #2 right now, and we don't know if it's a boy or a girl yet. The names we have currently picked out are Asher Theophilus (Theophilus is an old family name on my side), and Giovanna Aisling. We may still change our minds--we have a lot of time. The other names I have considered include Torin, Dante, Mannix, Estlin, Anatole, Konrad, Felix, Caspian, Dmitriy, Jeanmarie, Mariella, Adriana, Etiennette, Shahrazad, Vashti, Seraphina, Beatrix, Clarissa, Medea, Fiore, Tisiphone to name but a few. I do love names, especially unusual one from literature and mythology. Estlin is a male name that I can't find a meaning of, and it is the middle name of the poet e e cummings (yes, lower case). His full name was Edward Estlin Cummings. Medea and Tisiphone are from mythology, Dmitriy from Dostoevsky, Vashti from the Bible's book of Esther, and Shahrazad from Arabian Nights to give you some examples of my sources. Theophilus was the real christened name of Mozart, and Aisling (ASH-ling) is #31 in Ireland but not even in the top 1000 in the US where I live.
