Why Did Obama Choose To Keep His Unusual Name?

Most children of foreigners adopt an American name when they come to the U.S..

Why Did Obama Choose To Keep His Unusual Name?
Because its not as funny as BUSH or HUCKABEE or RUDOLPH or MITT !
Reply:Why should he change it? It's his name, part of his identity and it's very much so cool.
Reply:I'm pretty sure he was born in Hawaii which, the last time i checked is in America
Reply:it's his name - his heritage and who he is.

Would you change your name?
Reply:"...adopt an American name when they come to the U.S..."

Uhhh, he was BORN in the U.S., he didn't "come here." Its his name, he should change it because you find it unusual? My friends (natural born Americans) just named their kid Zaiden. Should he then change it because its "unusual?"
Reply:because that's the name his parents gave him, and it's a good name at that.
Reply:he was born in Hawaii...that is in America. It was the name given him by his mother and father.
Reply:When I met a foreigner who introduces himself to me by his 'adopted' name, I always ask what the real name is Y try to call him by his real name.

If the name is complicated I can see it being shortened, but that is not the case with Obama's name.
Reply:umm...let me think...maybe it's cuz IT"S HIS NAME! my name is strange and you don't see me changing it.
Reply:Another desperate Hitlery supporter goes down in flames!
Reply:Because if he had tried to change it, we would have found out and wondered what he was hiding. this way it's out there, good bad or indifferent.
Reply:You must be getting your info from that Paris h

Hilton treatise, 'History, That's Hot!'

how old are you?
Reply:He was called Barry until he decided to run for president. Why would anyone change their last name unless it was very long and impossible to pronounce!
Reply:because its his name
Reply:He was named after his father. My Great Grandparents and Grandparents became proud Americans, but, kept their names.
Reply:Because he is proud of his heritage. I do not hold his name against him...that is just ignorance.

However, I do hold his racism against him.

Could you attend a church which was exclusively your race, and honors the most outspoken racist from your race. For example, I could not attend a church which honored a Grand Wizard of the KKK...and if I did, and ran for office, the media would crucify me.
Reply:pride i guess...hes still racist
Reply:Because he is a muslim first last and always. If you go too his churches web site at Trinity Christian Church.com you will see that they do not admitt Whites or Hispanics too their church and that he is a liar and a raceist despite his campaign statements that he is the candidate who will uninte the races. What he is is an out and out liar and racisist. His church also favors Africans over Americans. Become an informed voter and check it out.
Reply:People who let go of their heritage and culture have no respect for themselves, how can we respect them?

Obama has done the right thing by keeping his given name.

It may be unusual to us but it says much more about his heritage.
Reply:His mother is an American. He was named by his father. If Obama would have legally changed his name he would have been thrown under the bus for "trying to hide his muslim ties" just like he is being thrown under the bus now. He's damned if he does, damned if he doesn't. I could care less about his name, but I am glad he never changed it in order to appease those with small minds.
Reply:Obama Osama?

Wyatt Earp had an uncle named James O'Kelley. Earp. How did he come to have such an unusual middle name?

With no offense to you, Wyatt, or James, it's not at all unusual for an Irish name to have begun with an O. Many who came here dropped it though.

What I think is even more odd is that you didn't say that you considered "Earp" an unusual name.

Wyatt Earp had an uncle named James O'Kelley. Earp. How did he come to have such an unusual middle name?
Using a mother's maiden name or a grandmother's maiden name as a middle name was quite common back then. In the 1700's, before middle names were much in use, a lot of kids got stuck with maiden names as first names; I have a Palmer Cady in my line, whose mother was a Palmer.
Reply:Anyone gets their middle (or first) names exactly as we still do... a choice of the parents. As already mentioned, using a family last name as part of a child's name was extremely common in the 1800's. Experienced genealogists look for that, as a possible clue to an earlier ancestor. Frequently, it can be the mother's maiden name, but not always. It could be passed down in the family.

Even though common, this is not a guarantee. Many people gave their children the names of a respected friend, or even a popular politician of the era.

And I was just recently working with some Earp descendents, related to Wyatt, but who wound up in Texas.
Reply:Most of the family's stated middle or nicknames were just an easy version of their first nameor a mothers maiden name.

since Wyatt had an older brother James, this stated "O'kelly" was not a middle name either but probably a way to distinguish the difference between James the brother and James the Uncle. Most likely playing off his mothers maiden name.
Reply:People often changed their names at Ellis Island -- or had them changed for them. I'm assuming the O'Kelly family was Irish so I'm thinking that when Wyatt's dad got off the boat he was drunk; when they asked him his name the only thing that came out was "earp!"

Any ideas on an unusual boys name?

Not too crazy but something different would be nice...what the heck if you think of some good crazy ones let me know. Thanks.

Any ideas on an unusual boys name?
My son is Orion Xavier, about 8 month ago I saw in the local paper a baby was born and given the name Orion Demetrius. I always said if I had another boy it would be Leland Amadeus or Thadeus Galileo. Maybe those names were why my partner was so excited that I'm pregnant with twin girls and not twin boys.
Reply:Look at some of the more recent top baby name lists. Avoid names on the top 100. Also, some baby name sites will tell you how many people have a social security number with that name, you could also probably do a yahoo search on names and social security numbers. Also, just in reading other peoples' answers, Ethan, Dakota, Noah, Nathan, Gaige... just to name a few, are quite common. Also, avoid, avoid, avoid... Jackson or Jaxon. It is incredibly, incredibly popular for baby boys born this year.

What is the most unusual thing you have made in the name of art?

Either as an artist or as a model.

I once had to dress as a faerie and hang around in a climbing harness from a ceiling for half an hour while I had pics taken.

And what would you do for arts sake?

What is the most unusual thing you have made in the name of art?
Well, I (male) once modelled for an art student (female) making a video piece, in which I was required to be filmed in some woods, stripping slowly naked and then masturbating while the filmmaker watched (in camera shot)!

I gather that the piece was considered very thought provoking (issues of power and control, was she making him do it or was he forcing her to watch etc.) and was well received within the department. It also appeared in an exhibition of the students' work
Reply:I'm a photographer and many people disagree with my choice to take pictures of a woman who appeared to be bleeding from the neck on the floor next to a smashed flowerpot (with a dead flower, no less)...

My other highly controversial picture was a woman giving birth with a man dressed in a doctor's coat holding a baseball glove...
Reply:Smile 8%26gt;(
Reply:They say that we all have a great fear of heights. So drink a bottle of Calvados and walk along the edge of a cliff. Don't turn your back on the cliff, you might fall offf the edge!
Reply:I once made a Rather phat paper machete hippo butt for a costume that my wife wore to a Halloween party. It was pink with a large red hand print on the right 'cheek'
Reply:Just for the sake of art my friends and I went for body painting and posed for some photos (for private eyes only) and the outcome were wonderful indeed.
Reply:I once cast three ***** out of clear, white and black silicon for a gay friend of mine. I put them in a presentation box and labelled it 'Three wishes.'
Reply:For a class I had to paint my character-self, and it was really awkward to present it because it had to resemble our visage and our inner beast. I felt like a fool explaining that my character-self was a ninja and I had the blood of my abuser on myself and my knives. I got an A at least
Reply:a child
Reply:I was trying to make a model of my friend while it ended up looking like a pathetic bird.
Reply:I once did a performance in which I demonstrated that the best way to correct the notoriously faulty text of James Joyce's novel 'Ulysses' was to use your own blood as ink - that way you'd be much more careful to avoid errors.

It involved a copy of the book, a nib, a nib-holder, a surgical swab and a lancet. It also involved sticking a big needle into my thumb. Nobody actually threw up, but some people nearly did.
Reply:I don't want to be an asshat, but I think the photographer is the artist in this case, not the model =)

My most unusual thing was one hour in which I spoke entirely to others in rhyming poetry. It was fun and irritating at the same time.

Whats a good unusual baby girls name?

Just found out today we are having a girl and undecided what to call her... have any ideas?

Whats a good unusual baby girls name?
The trick to unusual names is to pick one that's unique, but not too unique. Look for an unusual name that isn't too hard to pronounce or spell, and avoid names that may come across as just plain weird.

Just don't go too wacky - your kid will blame you for his name for the rest of his life, so pick one that won't embarrass him. =)

Anyone with an unusual name out there, How do you deal with it?

My name is extremely unusual. I hate having to correct people all the time and I always have to spell it over and over again. It's so annoying. When I have children, they will all have common names, I don't want them to have to go through what I went through. Do you feel the same way or do you embrace your name?

(Kiki is my screen name...not my real name...)

Anyone with an unusual name out there, How do you deal with it?
I have a unusual name Lokelani Malu, and no one can say it or spell it most call me lola or lani but i love having a name that no one has and yea im always correcting someone but you know what i rather correct them than have 2 or more people in a class with the same name and plus on top of that it makes me different from everyone else i love havin this name even though it gets annoying telling everyone how to say it
Reply:I think I have a unusual name ( Dallas ) but yes it get old telling people now I got that name. But if she cute I have no problem telling the story about how I got name that. So what is your name? Oh I named my daughter Silver Rae and she love the name.
Reply:I think everyone has a problem with their own name at some point or another. My name is Jacqueline, but I go by my middle name, Nicole, since I never liked my first name. My daughter's name is Cadence, and although I didn't think that was a hard name to pronounce, I still get nurses at her doctor's office calling her "Candace". People have a hard time with most names. I'm sure your name is beautiful.
Reply:well, i usually try to get over it when i'm asked to spell it or they write it wrong. i try to be patient, and if i'm talking to someone cool i'll tell them the story behind it, try to make it fun.
Reply:well when i was growing up i had an uncommon name ... Mia nowadays it seems to be popular. but i hated having to correct people all the time its Me-Ah not My-Ah. also i was named after my grandmother... whom i never liked me so that made me hate the name even more. now on that not i still think i would be able to give my child an unusual name. with the reasoning that they have nick names. Mia 3 letters no real way to NN that. so as long as the have possibility on what they want to be called i have no problems with unusual or uncommon names

Cheers
Reply:My name is Blaire and never had a problem with it,except spelling now n then, but I have a female cousin named Dayne and shes always been hassled about being a guy instead!=)
Reply:My name is quite unusual, Calli, and I always have to spell it as well as my last name. It doesn't really bother me too much - I've gotten used to it. I quite like my first name and being a bit different :)
Reply:Hmmm, that's very interesting. I myself have a sort of oddball middle name, but I just don't really tell it to people. Regardless of which, it's still my name, and while I may not like it very much I do embrace it. I probably wouldn't give my kids a weird name, but not a common one either. I'd want them to stand out.
Reply:My name is Angelic - but it is prounounced - An je leek - (Angelique) People are constantly saying it wrong and it does bug me. The answer I found is that my changing the spelling helps. So now I spell it Angelique

I have grown to like my name and most of my friends call me Angel, Angie or Ang.

But there are still people who call me Angela, Angelica, or Angeline. . .

I also find that getting a keychain or other object with my name is very difficult.

Oh well.
Reply:I have a unusual name...I am always correcting people as well and spelling it.....and I love it! I have 2 children now and a possible #3....when I had my daughter I named her a name which at the time, 10 years ago, was uncommon and my son who is 2 I also named a uncommon name!

The only down side I have found is I have never been able to go out and buy one of those keychains with my name on it:)
Reply:My name is unusual .... Cozette. I go by "Cody" Its much easier for people to remember. I started going by my nickname in 7th grade when I changed schools. Although people did find it fasinating that "Cozette" is french for Cinderella. Good Luck :)
Reply:i havent my name is boring amy...but my sisters are called pia and evangeline they love there names and most people think there beautiful, pia did get teeses by a girl she feel out with she called her pia pissed the bed, but pia dont care because shes a strong gal.... johnny cash sung a song about a man called sue, and because of his name he became a stronger person.
Reply:I have a common name sorry. What is your name anyway??
Reply:Be proud of your unusual name. Sometimes its nice to be different. My daughters name is July like the month and she gets people calling her Julie. She doesnt mind because she knows that her name is different than most names and it was given to her in love.
Reply:My name is Natalya and i hate correcting people but i love the fact that when i was in school or go somewhere when they try to say my name i can atleast tell their talking to me, rather than them saying jessica and like 5 people stand up.. im naming my daughter kalley and already everyone thinks its either pronounced like kalie or kelly and shes not even born yet but i cant see being confused with her name so im just going to wish her luck when shes old enough to have to explain it to people
Reply:well my name is Tamara and believe it or not people would mess it up. They always though it was SARAH which annoyed me. And some people tried calling me Tammy UGH%26gt;

One annoying thing was in school whenever the teacher would talk about "tomorrow" my heart would skip a beat because I thought they were going to ask me a question.

I was painfully shy. ugh

Thank goodness you are giving your children nice common easy names :)
Reply:My sons both have unique names, Jaymz(james) and he has to spell it for everyone but he really likes his name. We named him that so people wouldn't nickname him Jim or Jimmy instead he may get Jay when he's older and even at 11yrs of age no one yet has called him Jim or Jimmy or even Jay for that matter. Our other son' his name is Nicco(nee-co), we wanted him to have a nice name that wasn't common in schools and he will likely get the nickname Nick when he gets older. We have to spell both our sons name for everyone but we enjoy and love thenames we gave our sons, they both are strong names.
Reply:My husbands name is Cornelius I know not that weird but he has always been known as Cornie ever since he was born (cultural thing) I remember when I met him he said his name and my friend and I made fun of it only to find out his friend that was standing close to us had the same name (ya our faces were red) But I have gotten used to it he just has to always say to people his name is Cornelius when he calls somewhere so they dont gu "huh?" when he says Cornie ...
Reply:I disagree cause I have the exact opposite problem. My name is too common. I know way to many people with my name. Where ever I go there is always someone else with the same name as me. I run into more all the time. I do like my name but I'm thinking of going by something different. I don't know if I would give my kids uncommon names but I will at least not name any of my kids after me.
Reply:I knew someone named Tuesdai, everyone made fun of her. I felt bad for her she liked her name but when people make fun of you all the time it doesnt feel to good

A name that i like is Ocktober Rae, spelled the german way.

I LOVE those hamburgers!!!!!!!!

And the "Frings"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(Fries and onion rings served in a taco salad shell!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

And unlimited supply of condiments and dipping sauces!!!!!!!!!

Cool cookies too!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have you ever eaten at that restaurant with the unusual name, Ruddfukkers or something?
It is Fuddruckers. It used to have a lot of branches but most closed. Now it appears on the way back up. In Massachusetts it is near the Imax Theatre in Reading MA and in Connecticut it is in the Foxwoods Casino. They serve half-pound Angus beef burgers and have an unlimited fixings bar with fresh cut toppings and with all the beverages you can drink. It is a great family place.
Reply:Yes, Fuddruckers. Awesome hamburgers where you create your own. Great for a family outing as well.
Reply:The only restaraunt I can think of that is similar to that is "FuddRuckers". Is that what your thinking of?

And no, sorry, I have never eaten there, but do know people who have and they tell me it is a good place to eat!

Reply:Hell yeah, eat there. Their burgers are amazing plus it's got a vintage feel to it. It might be a little pricey but the food is worth it. Get one of those big bacon cheeseburgers with the baked beans. You'll be back I promise...by the way it's Fuddruckers. Enjoy...
Reply:Fuddruckers. Yes, I've eaten there. You can build your own burger.
Reply:Fudruckers. Good burgers

Does your cat have an unusual name?

What's their name and what possessed you to call them that :-D

I have a ten week old kitten named RadioGAGA and her name really suits her. She very vocal, smart and full of wiry energy :-)

Does your cat have an unusual name?
No, my cats are Max, Ava, and Jack. I believe Max is one of the most common names. Nothing else really fit him though
Reply:Not really unusual names but I have a silver tabby I named Sterling (as in sterling silver) but when my son was a toddler he would say 'Tanning' instead of Sterling so the cat will now only answer to Tanning.

I also have another tabby cat called Smeagol as I liked the name after reading Lord of the Rings years ago.
Reply:All my cats have always had odd names - they make the receptionists and nurses laugh when we go to the vets.

Name a unusual snack that you ate before and was it nice?

I thought of this question i was listening to the radio and they had a survey on this question

Name a unusual snack that you ate before and was it nice?
I remember my mother bouht he oddest looking fruit and showed us how to get the funny looking seeds out o eat them and nobody ever knew what they were. Now everybody is eating pomegranites or buying the 'Pom-Wonderful' Brand of juice and health nuts are raving about the anti oxident benefits of this odd fruit. I remember in high school art class we were making fruit bowls out of clay my pomegranite came out perfect and the only person who even knew what it was was the teacher.

Expecting a Baby Girl in Dec. and need help with a UNIQUE or Unusual Name Please?

To start with I found it easier to find a unique boy name, than i am a girl. I'm the type of person who Loves unique and unusual names that you really don't hear of much or at all. I have an unusual name (Alta Fay) and was passed down from my grandmother. I don't want to use something stupid sounding or one that will cause the child grief in school, but I don't want a child who is one of hundreds with the same ole' name in her school either.. Could you help me or suggest some for me? I'll show you a list I have. I want a first and middle name that flows well and some of these I had written down since high school. LOL. I love S's, O's and Z names.

Reply:And it's strange that you said that about Heaven spelled backwards because I was going to suggest Nevaeh seeing as I saw you liked the name Heaven. Maybe the add in the news paper was a sign. Nevaeh Rayne is always different. Or you could come up with something unique using different family names that way it could also have a special meaning to it as well. Good luck with the name search and congrats. Hope all goes well for you

Reply:My oldest granddaughter was born in February, so my daughter named her Amethyst. It is a beautiful name.
Reply:can i just warn you... be very careful when treading this path. i ended up with a horrible name. Allyn (pronounced like the male name Allen). i was picked on in school (are you a transvesdite?), adults always said something to the effect: did your dad want a boy? are you named after your father?. when i would introduce myself i would typically get one of 2 responses: 1) they would think i said Ellen 2) Allyn?! oh how... unusual %26lt;said very flatly%26gt;... whenever i had doctors appointment or something of that nature or even with telemarketers, i would get "Mr. %26lt;lastname%26gt;?". this resulted in terrible identity issues, and low self esteem. when i went to college, i decided it was a fresh start and shortened my name from allyn to just lyn. it saves so much confusion and heartache. my parents aren't thrill though
Reply:Akeya Kamay (uh-kay-yah). Akeya means "lover of wisdom" in Swahili.

Reply:My one daughter carries the name Hannah - German pronunciation, so that makes it different for her. She stands out and believe it or not, we have to spell her name all the time. Another daughter is named for great grandmothers - she is Esther Grace (Esther means star). Believe it or not she is one of a kind and her name is so unusual we even have to spell this name. Our youngest poor dear is Nicole Alice. You could open your bible and read all the women's names listed and choose one that way.
Reply:oohh mackenna faythe is gorgeous!!! I love it!!

dont call her nevaeh (heaven backwards, pronounced na-vey-ah) it sounds naff and it's getting really common anyways

What is the most unusual, yet beautiful, name for a baby boy that you've heard?

I wanna find a cute, unusual name for my new son! Help!

What is the most unusual, yet beautiful, name for a baby boy that you've heard?
I have logged a ton of hours looking for baby names. You name it i have probably read it. I absolutely love the name Leif. It is pronounced life or laif. It is Norse for life. A couple others i was really drawn to were Lucian, it is Latin for light and Drayden, which doesn't have a meaning. Check out baby names world. Good luck and congrats!!!
Reply:I have 3 boys and when my wife and I were going through names we came across some really cool ones. So long as you dont copy them exactly, if you like any of them, use them. My son's names are Trent Aric Coltan, Tate Tyler Drew, and Troy Cooper Dane.

Why do people feel outraged when people name their babies an uncommon name or unusual or can't pronounce it? ?

why don't most people like different names?

Why do people feel outraged when people name their babies an uncommon name or unusual or can't pronounce it? ?
I have seen that happen before they just take real pride in the name thats why they get a little upset if it isn't pronounced the way they mean it to.

I love people with unique names like ziggy, zoe, star, Gigi, river.

I think children should take pride in there own name and when ppl make comments like "ooh its going to look bad on a resume" Or ooohh there gonna make fun of them"

Common PEOPLE ...the key is confidence build your child up to be confident and they can have any name on there application it isn't the name that does it for people in life. It is how they carry themselves.

We really don't need a cookie- cutter world with all Bobs and Janes for our childrens names.

It is just CREEPY
Reply:Because they think, oh Isabella is a usuable name, AWWW we can call her Bella, the end let's use it.

Not even thinking about the fact that she will be one of eleven Bella's in her class.

Really, their are other usable, more uncommon, strong, beautiful great names out there, you have to find them instead of being lazy and uncreative.

If you just loveee the nickname Bella, how about Annabella, May-Belle, or Arabella?

Their are some very underused boy's names out their that I love. Like Rowan, which doesn't list on the top 100 for boys.
Reply:I am so sick and tired of people constantly putting down "different" names. At least we have an imagination and think outside of the box. What a boring world we would live in if everyone conformed to the same top 50 names. YUCK.

People also wrongly assume that different names will make life difficult later on. WRONG. I have 8 children with different names. They have never been teased or ridiculed at school, they have never had to spell and respell their names constantly for teachers and they have never been looked down upon as if they live in the ghetto. My eldest 4 children (now adults) have all had a good education and now have good careers. One is a chef, one has his own IT business and two are in the military.

A different name does not ruin your life like so many ignorant people think. A different name makes people remember you and is a great conversation starter. One of my sons went on a job interview with 250 other people. He got a call back the next day offering him the job and his new boss said "You got the job not only because of your qualifications but because I remembered your name".

I would much rather use a different name any day and my kids all feel the same way.
Reply:Because a lot of the time they are not real names, they are made up combinations of letters and spellings. I don't feel outraged when I see it, but I do feel a bit sorry for the child. He/she is likely to be teased and crazy names don't look good on Resumes they may have a harder time as adults.
Reply:because htey are thinking about the child, and the hardship it may encounter in life because of selfish parents who are trying to be trendy and name their kid the most outrageous "name" they can possibly think off.

think of the child constantly having to tell people how to pronounce and spell their name. imagine having to learn to write your name, if it was so ridiculous even a grown adult couldn't spell it.

unique name can be alright, but some people just take it too far.

thank goodness for the ability to legally change your name at 18.
Reply:because most people (or should i say sheeple) are robots that think we have all to act the same and do certain things a certain way.

I mean honestly. Im sure someone that lived in a tribe in Africa would think the name John was ridiculous sounding. But its all relative ya know?

People need to step out of their little world for 2 minutes and look at the big picture
Reply:I think it's because other people want you to cater to them. So what if THEY cannot pronounce MY child's name. As long as the child can pronounce their name that's all that matters. In a classroom when the teacher is calling roll the child will only have to give the pronunciation one time so the teacher and their classmates can hear it. Any other child will hear the name from the child when they ask what their name is! It's not that hard! Sorry I don't want my child to be 1 of 10 Johns, Michaels, Davids or Marys, Nicoles, or Ashleys in their class!
Reply:i don't know, but i'm scared my name is going to be popular.

Why can't everyone just be original and different!

i agree with you.
Reply:I don't think people are outraged. They're annoyed. When names are extremely difficult to pronounce, it makes life more difficult than it needs to be, especially for the one with the weird name!
Reply:Not sure why.....I get a lot of crap on YA for the names I chose. (and they aren't even as unusual as Apple. They are all real names or family last names)

I would hate for my child to be "Emily B" or "little Izzy" to distinguish her from the others in the class with the same name.

These are the girl names we are considering:

Salem Kaine

Rellah Marie

Ellery Sinclaire

Merritt Rome

Sora Masen

Aven Rook

= )
Reply:I don't know...I guess because they feel like it will make things hard for the child. Honestly I think it's because the people who may have to pronounce the name dont want to feel stupid themselves when they say it wrong. I mean my name (Alicia) is kind of common (or at least it was around the time I was born- I knew about 10 Alicia's with in two years of age from me) and people mispronouce or misspell it all the time. Also I had friends that had different names. One of my friends who is Chinese her name is Szu Chu (pronounced Sue Chew) and she would laugh watching the faces of the teachers trying to guess how to say her name....one actually said I'm not even going to guess how do you say it. :)

Anyway we are naming our son John Ryne (like Ryan) and he will go by Ryne (he is the fourth John) I'm sure people may have trouble with it but I figure in school his name will be John R. and then when they ask what he goes by he will say Ryne just like his dad did in school. Oh well if people don't like it thats on them not my son or us.
Reply:Not at all. It makes the world a tiny bit more interesting. I thought Apple was a gorgeous name for a little girl. I was probably more offended by the negative way certain people reacted towards it. :-)
