Reply:Eoghan - it's Irish and pronounced like Owen. It's my middle name, unfortunately for me, as I get strange looks since I'm a woman. My parents were looking for something Irish and thought that Eoghan was the original spelling of Egan (which is a family name a few generations ago). A serious lack of understanding of the incomprehensible and bizarre pronounciation of Irish - which is far more bizarre than English - led them to pick Eoghan. My older cousin (female) has it as her middle name also, for the same reason. I gave it to my son as a middle name, since it is actually a boy's name and I do like it.
There are several famous Eoghans in Irish history, including at least one St. Eoghan. One of the script writers for the BBC Sharpe's films is Eoghan Harris - I only noticed as it was the first time I'd seen the name outside of a text book.

Reply:My paternal grandfather is named Atlas; my father's maternal grandmother was named Izor. One of my paternal uncles is named Author (as opposed to Arthur). My paternal grandmother's name is Billie Jael ... not odd until you factor in the fact that Jael means "mountain goat".

One of my best childhood friends was named Robie; she was a girl, and it was pronounced like the word Robe with an ie on the end, not as Robbie. Her younger sister was Tisha (tee-sha not tish-a), and her middle name was Bea. They called her Tika-Bea.
