If you had an unusual name, would you keep it or change it?

I came across a story on The Drudge Report about an airliner in the U.K. which was kept on the runway for seven hours with over 300 passengers aboard. One of the passengers who spoke to the press is named Peter Sidebottom. This is the name that prompted my question.

If you had an unusual name, would you keep it or change it?
I hated my first name when I was a kid but now that I'm older, I'm able to appreciate it more since my name can be called and 20 other females don't say "What?!"

As for my last name, I keep telling my dad that I'm going to marry a Smith, Jones, Brown, Garcia, I don't care! Just as long as someone can look at it and pronounce it correctly.
Reply:That's not quite that bad, but it is bad.
Reply:My name is Keytek. I am American born, English heritage, etc; Is my name not unusual?
Reply:why change anything? I don't consider my name unusual but I'm the only one in the phone book with this name in a city of 1.4 million. Go figure! It's just a name and it could be worse, you might have been named a number.
Reply:I'd probably keep it. At least people would know how to spell it. People keep asking me how to spell my name "HALL"

I think 'hmm.. how many ways are there?'
Reply:I wanted to change it when I was a little kid, becuase I had no confidence. Now, people like it which makes me like it.
Reply:Change.
Reply:Yes I would keep it because it is very unique and it shows the real me
Reply:I would definitely change it. It is a distraction. I suppose it could be beneficial if you want to be remembered, but I'd rather be remembered for something other than a weird name. I actually met someone today with a very unusual name and I feel sorry for her -- she's a young child.
Reply:I'd keep it all the way. One of my drama professor's has the last name Midget and she's really tall. She kept it so that when she went to big auditions people would laugh at her name and remember her.
Reply:I would definately keep it.
Reply:I would keep it, as long as it was cool.
Reply:I would keep my unusual name, a name is just a name, if you don't like it make up a nic-name that you like and go by that.
Reply:I would definitely keep it because my name is unique unlike everyone else.
Reply:depends on the name some names yes i would change others no
Reply:i would keep it bcuz i like 2 be unique
Reply:I am keeping mine.

Sidebottom sounds like a character from Harry Potter!
Reply:That name isnt all that strange. I think

"Khnob Dorkn" is a more odd name.
Reply:This coming from buzzlightminute? lol
Reply:I have an unusual name, and I rather like it. If I didn't, I would have changed it a long time ago... Besides, at least I know I will probably be the only Atreadia in a group...
Reply:i do have an unusual name no i havent or wouldnt change it in fact when i got married i kept my last name and hyphenated it with my married name last .
Reply:Yes i would keep it, its what makes peter sidebottom peter sidebottom, not peter Chavez, not Peter Douglas, peter sidebottom. Unless of course I was a teacher then I would definitely change it because kids would just make fun of it.
Reply:Imagine walking up to a girl with a name like that....

"Hi. I'm David Buttsavage." Yeah, that would work...
Reply:I would keep it.
Reply:I would probably change something like that, but some names are so unusual that they are cool. Sidebottom however isn't one of them.
Reply:It all depends on the name. I had an aunt named Nanny Loony - She changed it al soon as possible to Nanny Lunea still unusual but not so demeaning. My very best friend is named August and I love it (interestingly enough, she was born on July 31st - go figure) She also has a brother named Seven. They must have given really good drugs while a woman was in labor back then! Just kidding.

And then, (believe me, this is the TRUTH) I was office manager for a doctor several years ago. We had a family with 3 young girls. There names were - Female - pronounced Fe-MAA-lee. Then there was - Syphilis - pronounced - Sy-FAA-liss. And last but far from least was Gonorrhea - pronounced - Gu-NOR-ee-ah. If that woman was NOT on drugs she should be shot!!!! I also have a friend with the last name Screws. He is very shy and when his name is called on the intercom (he is a nurse) his face still turns red.

So you see in my opinion it completely depends upon the name itself and how the person feels about it. No one should have to go through life with a name they are ashamed of.
Reply:I do have and I love it. I get so bored hearing the same names on so many different people!
Reply:It's not so different than BuzzLightMinute.
Reply:It depends mostly if you like or not, cause at least in Mexico is a major mess to change all your freakin documents to ur new choice
Reply:Well, I guess it would depend on the name, but I'd like to think I'd keep it, but then, with the name of Sidebottom, I'd have to give is some serious thought. God Bless you.
Reply:I believe I would have to change it a little bit...For example, I would either have to drop the "Side" or the "Bottom". The same goes for the name "Peabottom" or "Peabody"....My great great grandfather had the name of "Pinus". He changed his completely....He didn't just drop a part of it.....He changed it to "Stokes"....
