Is it legal for parents in America to name their child whatever name they wish even if its really unusual?

Just curious: Can parents choose whatever name they want for their baby no matter how unusual or weird it may sound? Is it possible for any name to be considered "illegal"?

You can name your child anything you want. I would suggest it not be a curse word, but if it is just not "normal" and means nothing negative, any name is fine.... In the 1800's things may have been different, but you are fine today.
Reply:you can name your kid whatever you want...

how do you think celebs get away with it!

i had an asian classmate named phuc when i was younger, when he turned eighteen he changed his name to fuku.
Reply:I don't think so, but I'm sure if you've named your child something like "devil" there will be a controversy over that and people will start questioning our freedom and shizz
Reply:No, there is a list of requirements for names.
Reply:No, not any name. You can't name your child a swear. Also, you can't use a trademarked name ie 'Nike'.

**EDIT - yeah maybe NIKE is common in other counties, but do you think you'd be allowed to use it in North America??? The person who asked the question asked about America specifically, not around the world.
Reply:I don't think it would be illegal, but if you do that then child protective services might want to start an investigation on you
Reply:yeah names like the f word or stuff like thtat ar eilligal but you could probly name your kid purplehipo
Reply:Anyone can chose any name they like. You can have two first names, two middle names, two last names...just a first and last name with no middle name. My sister invented a name (used part of her name and part of her husbands name) and named the baby that. You can give your child a totally different last name then yours or the fathers....all is and has been done.

That is what America stands for--Freedom

I don't see how any name can be considered illegal, Considered other things (strange, weird, crazy ect.) yes but not illegal.
Reply:Yes. Within reason. You can't name your baby **** or shitbag. You can name it table, speaker, bottle water if you want.

Example : Michael Jackson named his son Blanket
Reply:Yes, it's legal. Heck I went to school with a "Mommy" %26amp; some other names that ya just don't hear much.. Which is a good thing in some cases..
Reply:Yes . . . well, almost any name . . .
Reply:to a point you can but you can't name your child numbers
Reply:Think of the child:

Judas Hitler Dommer sounds ok but what will the child encounter?
Reply:I wish it was, but it's not. Parents can pick any name they want, even if it's totally ridiculous and it's obvious that it's going to scar the child forever. A lady who cleans the office where I work is called Cholesterola. I'm not kidding.

And I know people who are named "Nike"- it's farily common name in Nigeria/ South Africa and has nothing to do with the shoe brand. The shoes were named after the Greek goddess, so Nike is an actual name.
Reply:yeh you can name the child whatever you want
Reply:Yes If I want to name my child Ograth Warmongar then I can lol.
Reply:Yes.
Reply:PLEASE TELL ME YOU ARE NOT THIS DUMB????????????
Reply:It is legal. But there have been cases that have been brought to court!

So watch out.

The country of the Free, sometimes is not.
