The strangest name I have ever come across was when I was researching someones family history for them, Dallywass, which through the years became Dallywater.
Genealogists out there, (worldwide question) whats the most unusual name you have researched an what country.?
One of the family lines that I have been researching is from Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The surname is Boob. That is just a name that you can't "google"! The family has had fun with that one. Fortunately, the direct ancestor is female so the name didn't carry all the way down!!
I used to work in the property tax office and I think two of the funniest names I came across were Harry Hole and Ma Thang!!

Reply:Probabably the most unusal names will be found in Brazil where people try to make the first names stand out, because there are only around a half dozen major last names in Brazil. Slang terms for body parts, names of auto parts, comic book characters and some of the major villians have been used. Sparkplug, Adolf-Hitler and Whore are examples of first names used in Brazil.
Reply:Mandred. My gg uncle. Reminds me of an orange.
Reply:I have a female ancestor whose maiden name was Hoe,Really she was a descendant of Rice Hooe, the name changes through time but is from the Saxon name Hoo. But thats the strangest name can't even mention it without some off colored remark from someone.Oh well thats it.
Reply:If you really get into genealogy you will undoubtedly find a ton. Recently I found someone named Green White. Who would do that to a kid? But my weirdest would be some of the names from Finland, Sweden and Denmark. I am a descendent of Fornjotur, King of Finland. There is also the line that goes Heytir Gorrsson, Gorr Thorrasson, Thorri Snaerrson and Snaer Jokulsson (Norway and Finland). I love finding names from Fantasy books in my family history too. I have a couple of Hedrigs, a Gandolf, and some others.
Reply:The strangest name I have in my tree is Straughair you find it here in the UK and in Australia,
Reply:Was interested to see Mitchell's comment about someone with first name of Rice as I came across a Rice Lamb when transcribing some Lambeth burials and I thought the name must be unique.
My own grandfather's first name was Shepherd, which I think is fairly unusual.
Reply:I think Dork Nrornk was probably the funniest. It turned out to be a transcriptionist's error for what was supposed to be Derek Nerynck...took me 6 months to find the real name.
