What's the story behind the unusual creek name?

I cross Skeleton Creek in my travels around the north part of Oklahoma and I've often wondered about the story behind the name. Where would you start researching the origin of a creek's name?

Are there some unusual names for creeks that you have noticed? Care to share the story of its name?

What's the story behind the unusual creek name?
There is a Broken Sword Creek near me. It got its name from when the Indians fought and captured Colonel Crawford near Crawford %26amp; Wyandot counties in Ohio %26amp; burned him at the stake.
Reply:Nestled on the banks of Skeleton Creek (that is why we call it Chisholm Creek, not Skeleton Creek, who'd want to live there?). The creek meanders through the subdivision offering abundant trees, wildlife habitat (wild turkeys and deer visible throughout most of the year). A designated public park for the Chisholm Creek Village residents which offers significant amount of area for future ball fields/soccer fields. Chisholm Creek Village is located close to Enid with the quietness of the country. Chisholm Creek Village is the only neighborhood in Enid that offers a community swimming pool, community playground, and community clubhouse. Chisholm Creek Development is Enid鈥檚 only Nationally Recognized Energy Efficient Chisholm Creek Village is nestled on the banks of Skeleton Creek (that is why we call it Chisholm Creek, not Skeleton Creek, who'd want to live there?). ...I googled it.

Reply:Growing up, my family always went fishing on B***** Creek. So named because that was what it was to get down to the creek. Shortly after the Californians came to the valley, they renamed it the Snake River North Fork, because a woman was offended by the other name. It's now back to B***** Creek because it was pointed out to those folk that the creek has no relation to the Snake River and the locals like the name just as it is.

Edit: I see that Yahoo blocks certain words. The word starred out is what a female dog is called.
