We have a new mini dachshund. Looking for a cute n unusual name for a bo. Any ideas?
You know when my mom wanted to name our pets something... even though the rest of my family would hate the name -- she would ususally just call them her choice name. The rest of our family would jeer at it for a couple weeks but eventually we gave in and the name would suit our pet just fine.

So, if you wanted to call him Lil' Bow Wow (pretty cute, I think) you could probably pull it off. (mind games, ha ha... :D )

Reply:my dog's name is Gilby. Btw i didn't name him, the breeder did. Gilby was the strangest name i've ever .. come across. I thought of renaminig him cause i thought it was an ugly name. But now i'm glad i kept it cause its strange, yet unique, and it just fits him real well.

how about Gilby?? lol =]

I know of a Hershey, a Merry, a Cocoa, and a Pippin.

You may be more original than that. I have 5 dachsies, I try to tailor the name more to the personality than the looks.

By the way, no dachshund should be 4 pounds, this is not a teeny, teeny toy breed, this is a hunting dog originally and too small a dachsie is not going to have very good conformation (breed standard looks) or be healthy.

Smallest dachshund I have ever seen was just under 8 pounds at adult age. Anything under 11 pounds is a mini, most are tweenies, not minis, at 11 to 15 pounds, standard dachshund are 16 to about 32 pounds.

Dachshund are not lap dogs, they are prey dogs, used for hunting badgers (dachs means badger in German, hence "badger dog"=dachshund).

They need to be large enough to have the stamina to hunt and chests big enough to go "underground" and dig out the badger. Dachshund are strong, powerful, very brave and resilient dogs for their size - but you sure don't want one looking like a chihuahua or yorkie - defeats the purpose and would be a joke.

I hope your dachsie gets stronger and weighs at least 10 or 11 pounds - more would be great.

Good luck, I do dachshund rescue and always have people new to the breed get a book "Dachshund for Dummies", dumb name but great book - tells you everything about dachsies, background, personality, how to train, etc.

Worth your while to read - and it's funny and very informative.

Have fun, dachsies are the greatest dogs imaginable if brought up well, with love but good training.
