About half the kids now a days have unusual and unique names. My children as well. My son who is in grade 5 has never been picked on. The kids now a days think unique names are cool. I'm just surprised how many people think children will be picked on. It's not like that where I am and I am in a big city.
Why does everyone think kids will be picked on if they have an unusual name?
I have the same experience- our children are named Geronimo and Jericho and everyone smiles and asks what will we call them for short or when they go to school. I think it is usually shallow people that would have teased people themselves that say such things. Evolved self aware people are not preoccupied by such matters.
Reply:They dont mean unusual as if noone else has it....They mean unusual in a way noone can pronounce it
Reply:well its just those ppl who wish they too had such a name that they can be proud of ppl r just ignorant
Reply:Because Kid can be the cruelest humans ever
Reply:In a big city I think it's actually less likely to happen because kids are a little more... anonymous. The schools are bigger, so there's always something else to do.
Come to the country sometime, and you'll see a definite difference. Our schools are smaller, and everyone knows everyone else. And the kids can get nasty. Really nasty, over the most ridiculous things.
Reply:I really don't know why people say that. I just answered someones question asking if the name kaydance sounded good and i think it is a very good name and people answered her saying people will make fun of your kid.
People has said that about my son "His name is julian" and no one has picked on him for his name.
I would rather have a unique name than a name everyone has, I was named Jessica and do you know when i went to school there were 4 other jessica's in my room and so many more throughout the middle and high school.
Atleast i know only my son has the name julian where we live. So many people tell me that it is a very nice name and askes how i came up with it cause people are so use to plain names.
I will never get why people say unique names will cause name calling later on in life for your kid.
Reply:Give them time , he hasn't hit jr high or hs yet.
Generally it is because unusual names are hard to remember, and employers if they think it's a ' foreign' name have a tendency not to hire someone with an usual name. Saw a study on 20/20 or one of the news shows where they said black kids with unusual ethnic sounding names were hired less often than white kids with ' regular' sounding names.
It may not be right but it happens .
Frankly I always think parents should say their kid's name like he's graduating from college as they tell the nurse his name , if you hear a snicker or titter , that should give you a clue.
Reply:Names has little to do with whether a child is picked on or not. I think the shy children and the children who are more reserved, have a harder time. It is the responsibility of the adults, such as parents and teachers to put a stop to it. Children are worth fighting for.
Reply:well kids r cruel, they will pick on the smallest thing, my son wears glasses and was told glasses are uncool, they are for nerds, even tho glasses r becoming more and more stylish. just be careful, my husbands niece is named raven, people say it sounds like a strippers name, it's sad to say it's not just kids that make fun.
