Both my kids have uncommon names- they are both traditional of my culture. I wanted to name my new baby something different to them like- tiger, tigerlily, tahllulah, cocoa, milky, asti, or cinnamon. My husband thinks I am cruel and the child will be picked on, and our families both think I am joking. There are so many unusual names now that it is quite common. Anyway what do you think?
Do you think giving your baby an unusual name is cruel?
Please don't call your child Milky! If it's a girl, imagine the taunts when she hit's puberty at school.
Reply:The more unique the name, the more unique the child..
Reply:its definitely cruel. You don't want to scar your kid for life and they would probley legally change it the first chance they get.
Reply:my boys names are jaycob, jett and kheenan. i like different names to. my theory is that no name will ever be unique but you can spell the name any way you like. kheenan is normally spelt keenen. i love tigerlily but im not to sure bout milky or cinnamon.
Reply:An uncommon name is ok
but not to uncommon
I dont like milky or cinnamon at all
It can be cruel to name a child with a weird name
but its always the parents choice in name
Reply:Name it a normal name. Not Bob or Lucy but something average... Definitely not tiger lily!!!
Reply:I myself have an unusual name, but nothing like what you had suggested. To be honest, the names you had picked out sound like stripper names or the names of emerging porn stars. I think a unique name is ok, if there is some meaning behind it which cannot be thwarted into something embarrassing to your child. While the names you have chosen might have some connection to your culture or heritage, you must also take into consideration how you yourself would feel if your parents named you "Milky." Perhaps using those names a middle name would be easier, if you cannot bear to part with them.
Reply:It is cruel
Your hubby talks a lot of sense
The child WILL be picked on
School is hard enough without making it worse by having a name
that is far from normal
Reply:I think it is plum foolish, give them wise names.
Reply:nope i like names you don't hear at all i nameed mine Havana Rain and i love it !! pick what ever name you like !
Reply:maybe u can give your child a traditional first name and an unusual middle name.. you can call him/her what u want, but on a resume or job application, they can us the traditional name and be taken seriously by society.
good luck
Reply:unusual is cool this millenium my child is named after a car, and society thinks its the coolest ...........tradittional names are sooo commen give your child an idenity of its own it will be appreciated
Reply:It can be cruel, depending on the name. I think it would be cruel to name a child 'Milky', but I think Asti is pretty for a girl.
Cocoa and Cinnamon sound like stripper/porn star names, and Tahllulah has a hokey 'old west' type feel to it. I was in a play once, a western comedy, and there was a character named Tahllulah Bell.
Tiger would be an okay boys name, but you would definately need to give a more mainstream name for the other name, so your son could choose which one to go by. The same with Tigerlily.
Unusual names are very popular right now, but there is a fine line between unusual and wierd.
Reply:There are two things to consider. One is how the name will sound to classmates in school and the other is how it will affect their chances at a professional career. I think those names would lead to childhood teasing and not being taken seriously by professionals.
Reply:YOUR HUSBAND IS RIGHT ON THIS ONE! WHY TAKE A CHANCE WITH YOUR CHILD'S HAPPINESS BY SADDLING THEM WITH A WEIRD NAME?
Reply:I think unusual names are cool, but you have to be careful. I wouldn't go for anything related to food, but that's your choice. And maybe that'll be the style for your child's generation.
Reply:Unusual names can be great Although I don't think i would go for tiger or cocoa... or after any foods.
People have told me i am crazy as i am going to name my baby when shes born Tahlia (tar-lee-a)
Just be care full what you call it, as when its growing up, kids at school can be really cruel.
But I think unusual names are great. At least when you're at a park and you call your child you wont get a million kids running to you!!
Just remember, your child has to live with it
Reply:I agree with your husband---kids are incredibly cruel, and a weird name is like a license for them to pick on your child!
They find plenty of other reasons to pick on each other, don't put a target on a kid's back!
Reply:tahllulah? I think the whole school will pick on that poor soul.
Dont give weird unusual names. Give special unique names that have small chances of being laughed at, like mine :p
