What place has the funniest or most unusual name?
Fu**ing, Austria. It's a real town in Austria about 30 or 40k from Salzburg.
Reply:Elephant Butte, New Mexico.
Reply:Bone Lick Kentucky
Reply:Cut and Shoot, Texas
Reply:There's a town in North Wales that probably has the world's longest name. The locals just call it "Llanfair," though, for obvious reasons. (Just as the locals in Wapakoneta, Ohio, call their town "Wapok." That's Neil Armstrong's home town.)
The Welsh town? --
Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwl...
EDIT: Dagnab Yahoo, anyway!! It didn't show the entire name. So here it is again... with a space inserted in the middle of it. (But it IS *one* word!)
Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrn drobwllllantysiliogogogoch

Unusual name I heard for the first time today and like a lot?
The name was Carme.
It was pronounced CAR-MAY
Her middle name was another one I haven't heard of before - Luque I believe it was pronounced Luke.
What do you think of Carme Luque?
Unusual name I heard for the first time today and like a lot?
The two sound nice together but I especially like Carme........Blessings Yahoo
Reply:I don't much care for it, but I might like Carma Lupe instead. ;)
Reply:Not sure it would have to grow on you
Reply:it sounds like some kind of french dessert ....something close to Carme is Carmen or Karmen
Reply:Unique is cute now, but it can be hard on your kid when she's grown. You may want to think about how she will have to handle all the questions about pronounciation and spelling for her entire life rather than how impressed your friends are for the first month after her birth.
Reply:Sounds like a boy's name.
Carmen might be cuter for a girl, but I don't like Carme... sounds like a make-up brand.
Reply:People will probably pronounce it Carm or Carmy.
Reply:The pronunciation is interesting, but I think I'd tweak the spelling to make it look more "complete". Carmey, Carmay, Carmey.......something along those lines. Luque reminds me of torque, or some sort of mechanical sound, so I am not too keen with it.
Reply:EWW
Reply:Carme reminds me of a product, possibly a facial cleanser. I don't think it works as a given name.
Luque is fine in the middle spot, but I'm not wild about it, either.
Reply:Ew..
Reply:Eh, I'm not really a fan. Sounds like a French dessert or something...
Reply:its ok different but maybe for a dog or something its sounds like come here luke if you say it fast
Reply:I like it alot! :-)
Reply:oh no!!! nd luque is common its just the spelling thats unique
Reply:Sounds like chocolate! I dont like it!
Reply:I don't think of it! It's horrible. Nearly as bad as a kid I know called Rainforest!!!
Reply:yh it nice and very different xoxo
Reply:I don't really like it. Sorry.
Reply:Really unique!
I heard of someone named abcde (pronounced ab-said-dee)
Reply:I think it sounds like a food dish
Reply:Sounds like a candy bar. Don't like it.
Reply:I love the name Carme, but when you combine it with Luque it sounds kind of awkward, don't you think? Though I still believe it is such a unique and pretty name!

Do any of you, have family members or do you yourself have, a unique or unusual name or names?
I do. I had, a great grandpa and uncle, who both had the first name of Hartwell, on my mom's side, and I know of others who's had family members with, unusual first or middle names. Such as my sweetheart's dad and brother, who both had, the first name of Friend

I had a dog named Runterbeaker
Reply:I have a 7th great step-grandfather named Eltweed Pomeroy, and a cousin by marriage 4 times removed named Malinda McCorkle.
If you look on the LDS Census site
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/f...
you can find people named "Snow Frost" and "Frost Snow". Some have a middle initial "N". Also two people in England whose last name is a slang term for a lady's private part that rhymes with "Runt". They are famous in genealogical circles and I can't take credit for finding them; someone sent me a list of oddities that had twelve layers of "%26gt;" in it and I remembered them.
Reply:My younger sister is named Clifteen for my father whose name was Clifton.
Back in the 19th century it wasn't unusual for girls to be named for states. One family line,
there were an Indiana, Missouri, Virginia, Louisiana. I have even seen on census records girls named Arkansas.
Reply:Here are some of the unusual names in my family tree: Delphin, Darwin, Kermit, Serepta, Temperance and I had a grandmother whose name was Lovina, but her nickname was "Love". I had uncles who had no middle names but just simply the initials of their parents' last names (Walter A. and Welby O.).
Your Hartwell sounds like a family name. Also, a friend of mine has relatives whose last name is Friend.
In my family, many members were named after presidents such as: James Madison, Woodrow Wilson, Andrew Jackson, George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.
Reply:Gray Haggard. I thought the combination of those two words most unusual.
Reply:Lots of different names .... Son is Brigham best friend is Sagery... Grandfather is Poley... Great uncle Trust ... great Uncle Cannie.. Great Uncle Bronnie... Great Aunt Parilee... GGGreatgrandma Artimece..GGGrandfather Lanier and it goes on lol... My name is Terra I have a cousin named Tierra and a cousin named Dusty not real rare but a bit unusual these days.. Thanks that was fun walking down history lane ...
Reply:My grandson is Marcus Jonavan
Reply:On my husbands side they have the most unusual mans name I have ever heard and as far as I can see it went back five generations. I am so glad it did really because they have a very common surname, but I have only ever come across this name five times and they are all related to my husband. The name is 'ZEPHANIAH', it made doing my husbands family tree a lot easier because our Zephaniah's are unique.
Reply:My family has the name Neely. My great-great grandfather named his son after a favorite uncle, and so it started as a generational thing. Dont know if you would consider it "unique" but I rarely hear it used for males (like in my family).

I have always had dogs as pets and have always named them according to their looks. I am an Indian parsi so the names are also in Gujarati language like jaadu because he was very fat, manjri becomes she had cat eyes, gabbu because he was very cute and so on.

Where can i find the meaning to my unusual name?
my name is Suen but i never see it anywhere i did see it twice. i wanna see a detailed meaning of where it originated from and what it means
Where can i find the meaning to my unusual name?
Suen is found in the root name for God(dess) . . . it is a very powerful name. Also connected with the moon.
Personally, I have never met anyone with my name (although I have met people who have met others) and I love that my name is uncommon.
Reply:I see many examples of the name among people of Chinese ancestry. If you share that or a similar ancestry then it may be an old family name or last name. If so check out:

Reply:While you're here, is there a genealogy question we may try to help with?
Reply:Wow! You do have a pretty name but Ive looked on a few sites and havent been able to find anything about the meaning of it...the closest I got was the last part of a boy's name Anakausuen which means "worker". Sorry I couldnt help more!
Reply:If it is your first name, the obvious is family. Someone named you, where did they get it. If it is a last name, ask which countries your family is from. Sometimes, names are made up, creatively spelled. Or changed upon immigration by the authorities or person him or her self. Someon lopped off the first 3 letters of my grandfathers last name!

Reply:I knew a guy named R. Just the letter R.
And I knew a girl named Stormie Raines.
When it comes to people I don't know, I'd have to say Pilot Inspektor (a boy) and Audio Science (a girl) are the weirdest names I've ever heard. Also up there on the list are celebrity baby girls named Heavenly Hiraani Tiger Lily, Fifi Trixibelle, and Moxie Crimefighter
Reply:The weirdest actual name(for a girl) i've heard of is Saiorose, pronounces Seersha. I like the way it looks, but its pronounced very weirdly. It's Irish Gaelic, btw. The weirdest boys name i've heard of is Pilot.....my neighbour's brother named his kid that. I think it's weird. You never see a kid walking around with the name 'Dentist' or 'Artist' i dont get why Pilot gets to be a name.

Reply:I named my cat after the house elf from the Harry Potter movies. His name is "Dobby."
My reason is that he sleeps with me in my bed, and often sleeps in my bed without me. In the book Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, we first read about Dobby in one of the earliest chapters of the book: The house elf was sitting on Harry's bed. And in the movie of the same name, he was jumping up and down on the bed near the very beginning of the film. Another connectiong is that Harry Potter helps free Dobby from his terrible master by tricking the master into giving his houseelf a sock. My cat's favorite toy happens to be an old sock. What do you think of the name Amaryllis and do you know any other nice unusual names?
I was wondering what everyone thought of the name Amaryllis. I looked it up and babynamesworld said it was a Greek name meaning "Sparkling". Does anyone know any other girl names that are possibly Greek? I like names of Greek Goddesses. If anyone has any of those they think is appropriate for a baby girl, please tell.
If you have any other names you like that aren't common, post them as well.
Thanks, much love.

I had a teacher named Neddie, which I always thought was unique ... she was named after her father Ned. She married a man named Harold (a.k.a Harry) Ballzack.
I'm quite fond of the name Moana, it means "Wide Expanse of Water" in Maori, though I first heard it on the movie "Pan's Labyrinth".
Some other unique names I like: Noelie or Nolee, Tacey (means "quiet" or "silent" from the latin word tace), Aislinn, Madeleina (mad-a-layn-a), Samara, and Reva ("one that moves" in sanskrit).
I'm very fond of Japanese names (being Japanese myself) ... some that I know of are Sayomi, Miho (my cousins name ... she like to have thrown a fit when she first read "Sin City"), Yue ("blessed with gentleness"). I also actually know a boy named Ichigo ... but it's spelled differently than the "Bleach" character (the way he spells it means "surrounded by wise protection").

What's the most unusual name for a boy or girl you've ever seen or heard?
I really think Maurine is a weird name for a girl and I think for a boy that the weirdest boy name is Jan cause believe it or not men or women can be named Jan. Jan is normal for a girl though but what name a boy Jan? What's the weirdest names you 've seen or heard?

Reply:I went to school with a girl named Kevan - I thought that was pretty odd (I guess more people are using boy names for girls these days, but not when I went to school). My boyfriend Kevin still doesn't believe me that there was a girl with his name, spelled differently, lol
Another girl was named Ismene (pronounced is-meanie). Kids made fun of her sometimes. It is a Greek name I believe.
For a boy... I think the weirdest would be Toyo. It's pronounced Toe-yo. He's South African, so I know it's an ethnic name, it just struck me as unusual when he introduced himself. After awhile of knowing him though, it wasn't so odd anymore.
The weirdest names for siblings were this family I met (this is real, I'm not making it up) who named her kids Omar, Omarion, Omarah, and boy/girl twins Amar and Amarah. It was somewhat confusing, to say the least.
Why the thumbs down?
Reply:Yes, Jan is a common name for a guy in Europe. It might be pronounced "yawn" though. The weirdest name I ever heard was a Korean boy named Young Bum. The poor child never did like school much. I also knew a girl named Devon, a boy named Mag'd (spelled like that) another boy named Tiger, a girl named Cody and a two brothers named Carsonal and Quinlin. And there was this girl at my school named Philippa (basically Philip with "ah" on the end) that got called Pippa for short. People kept calling her Peepa, LOL!!
Reply:These are actually normal names (at least the second one is), but I think they are weird.
Tucker. Why name a kid tucker? Like he's tucking his pants in or something? Lol.
Amanda for a girl, although it is common and sounds normal by now, it's weird if you think about it. I had a friend who made fun of this Amanda who went to his school, by saying "Hey look, it's a man, duh!"
Axel. Why name a boy after a car part? It's not a very appealing name either.

Why do some people name their children unusual names nobody's ever heard of?
why do some people make up names for their kids or choose far-out names? some peeps have told me they want their kids to be unique, what is it really?
Why do some people name their children unusual names nobody's ever heard of?
some people are asking for their kids to be beaten up as school.
They think it's a laugh to name them stupid names and five years later realise how stupid they were to call them Maximus because they liked the film Gladiator.
Stick to something decent, for your kids sake.

I love the idea of unique names (as long as they aren't too out there). When I was in school there were 2 other girls in my class with my name not to mention the other 10 or so girls in the rest of the school with my name. It was very annoying.

I need an unusual name for a dog walking business?
I'm 12 years old and I want to start a dog walking business but I don't have a name. I have a one name in mind, woofy walks, but I'm not sure It's good enough.
Also don't start talking about how you wouldn't hire a 12 year old to walk your dog.
I need an unusual name for a dog walking business?
I'd be MORE ready to hire a 12 year old if I needed someone to walk my dog.
Hmmm...I can't think of any good names right now. I have a few suggestions though. Maybe you can improvise them.
-Dasher dogs
-Best paw forward
-Growling Dog walkers
-Paw pals
-Perfect pet dog walkers
Good luck with your business anyway. Remember -elderly, rich women are the best people to offer dog-walking to.
EDIT-I like patter paws too. ;]
Reply:Well, I wouldn't hire a 12 year old to walk my dog, that's just the facts. My best friend takes my dog out to potty 3 days a week and even that makes me nervous sometimes.
However, maybe some people would - never hurts to try.
Are you insured and bonded? That's something you need in order to have a business like that. Talk to your parents and maybe they can help you find a way to get these things. Without insurance, you're putting yourself and your parents in a position of huge legal risk.
Reply:Hi Kitty.
Good for you to have such ambition at a young age. I've always picked names that start with the first letters in the alphabet. That way, when I later took an ad in the phone book, people saw my ad first. Most people start calling with the first number they see.
"Ambitious K-9 Walkers" for example.
Best of luck to you.

Granted I always liked the Lily type names like Lily, Lillian, Lilith etc but always thought they were too common. But there are a lot of really pretty girl names so good luck! As for boys name, I have no idea since I never had a son. I'm hoping I will though for my next pregnancy (whenever that will be). Reply:I'm not sure how unique it is but I named my daughter Lilia. I never heard of the name until someone came into the office I worked at with that name and I just fell in love with it. My sister in law who is pregnant said if she has a son she will name is Massimo. It's a nice name but I wouldn't have picked it lol. Anyway, good luck!!

For name ideas I have always liked Lillian or Lilliana. Ohh and Natalia is also pretty. or Natalie. Or from the gilmore girls Rory or Lorelai [my name i may add] are also unique.

For my son I gave him normal family names, but I gave him alot of them and that made them unusual. His name is Robert Anthony James Michael. It makes his name unusual and very special.

What is the most original or unusual name you have heard?
I meet many children through work and have met girls called Lyric, Jurney and Dayspring (all Australian/English names). I wondered what unusual names other people have heard among English speaking nations?

I heard of Dream for a boy and Magic. I like Miracle because it has meaning for ex. one parent had many problems during pregnancy and therefore her daughter was a Miracle.
Reply:Ok Desire is a bit creepy. At first I thought it said Desiree which is a normal name but Desire...odd. Maybe they spelt it wrong, how was it pronounced?
The weirdest name I have heard of was Wednesday. I know there are some others but I can't place them right now! I heard of an Indigo.

Why does everyone think kids will be picked on if they have an unusual name?
About half the kids now a days have unusual and unique names. My children as well. My son who is in grade 5 has never been picked on. The kids now a days think unique names are cool. I'm just surprised how many people think children will be picked on. It's not like that where I am and I am in a big city.
Why does everyone think kids will be picked on if they have an unusual name?
I have the same experience- our children are named Geronimo and Jericho and everyone smiles and asks what will we call them for short or when they go to school. I think it is usually shallow people that would have teased people themselves that say such things. Evolved self aware people are not preoccupied by such matters.

Reply:I really don't know why people say that. I just answered someones question asking if the name kaydance sounded good and i think it is a very good name and people answered her saying people will make fun of your kid.
People has said that about my son "His name is julian" and no one has picked on him for his name.
I would rather have a unique name than a name everyone has, I was named Jessica and do you know when i went to school there were 4 other jessica's in my room and so many more throughout the middle and high school.
Atleast i know only my son has the name julian where we live. So many people tell me that it is a very nice name and askes how i came up with it cause people are so use to plain names.
I will never get why people say unique names will cause name calling later on in life for your kid.
Reply:Give them time , he hasn't hit jr high or hs yet.
Generally it is because unusual names are hard to remember, and employers if they think it's a ' foreign' name have a tendency not to hire someone with an usual name. Saw a study on 20/20 or one of the news shows where they said black kids with unusual ethnic sounding names were hired less often than white kids with ' regular' sounding names.
It may not be right but it happens .
Frankly I always think parents should say their kid's name like he's graduating from college as they tell the nurse his name , if you hear a snicker or titter , that should give you a clue.
Reply:Names has little to do with whether a child is picked on or not. I think the shy children and the children who are more reserved, have a harder time. It is the responsibility of the adults, such as parents and teachers to put a stop to it. Children are worth fighting for.
Reply:well kids r cruel, they will pick on the smallest thing, my son wears glasses and was told glasses are uncool, they are for nerds, even tho glasses r becoming more and more stylish. just be careful, my husbands niece is named raven, people say it sounds like a strippers name, it's sad to say it's not just kids that make fun.

Would prospective employers be unwilling to hire me for a job if I had an unusual name?
I'm considering changing my first name to 'Shadow'. Not just because of the video game character, but also because I like the idea of having a name that is unique. Question is, would employers refuse to hire me for a job if my name is very different to the norm?
Would prospective employers be unwilling to hire me for a job if I had an unusual name?
My cousin was into the country and western "scene" and dressed up as a gunslinger and went by the nickname of "Shadow". To all the people at the club that is his name on a Saturday night. Changing your name officially 24/7 is another matter entirely, and when it came to applying for a job, it is quite possible your new moniker would do more harm than good.
It would be against the law for a company to discrimate against you purely based on your name, but this does depend on what your name would be, and whether or not you would be in contact with the public. If your name could be considered offensive by some, "Adolf Himmler Goering" or "Jesus de Jesus" then your appliaction would probably go straight in the bin. With a name like "Shadow", who knows what a prospective personnel manager would think? How about getting a job first and then changing your name once you have your foot in the door? Then they are much less likely to object.
Reply:OK, as someone who shuffles the odd incoming CV, I'll give you a truthful answer.
When I am presented with several CV's for one placement, I want to narrow my search down.
If I had a CV from someone called 'shadow' and 3 or 4 other (equally qualified) people with 'normal names', I would chuck your CV straight away.... reason being that you sound unconventional and I need normal guys who are conventional, conservative team workers.
I am not worried about your rights or how wonderful you *might* be.... I am making a decision for my whole company, so I will not take a risk.
you would not even be asked for an interview.....that's life
Reply:No, but your choice does not strike me as very imaginative. It is the name of a horse, and in Aborigine and Red Indian tribes it is a common name. Come to think of it, it is also the name of a car...
Sky...Cloud...Rain...Storm ...Sunshine...Light...Dark...? Perhaps a rather more atmospheric name would be better. You are not applying to the Meteorological Office are you? Why not go for something like Isobar? Prospective employers would think your parents did not know how to spell Isembard (as in Brunell) and feel sorry for you.
Reply:they shouldnt do but does happen. You could ask them y u didnt get the job and if its that then get them done.
but think about the name. there must be something better then that

Reply:Sometimes having an unusual name can help. Particularly in a competitive or sales environment, it helps people to remember you and means you might come first to mind when they want to place an order etc.
Reply:I shouldn't think so- any intelligent person would assume your parents gave you the name anyway! And it could even work in your favour, it would make you unique.
Reply:I wouldn't have thought it would make any difference. Some kids are stuck with much more unusual names than shadow!
Reply:It's unlikely that employers would outright refuse to employ you but there might be a certain caution and that's not a positive. Reply:I don't see why it would matter. There was a very well known emcee on TV years ago named Shadow Stevens. You wouldn't be the first to go by the name.

Reply:Yeah, it probably would hurt your chances a bit. Someone who would change their name to shadow would be considered pretty non-traditional to an employer and they generally like traditional (easy to control) employees. If you're going into IT or something very creative, this might be less true. What is your name now? Is it possible for you to use shadow as a nick name and keep your legal name or does it have to be all the way...good luck Shadow!

Reply:Shadow???? erm whilst I think that name is a bit girlie (judging from your avator youre a guy?) but no I dont think they can discriminate against you because of a name! lol!! xx
Reply:It is NOT unlawful to discriminate on the grounds of a name only. In other words if someone came to me for a job and was called "Anal Probe III" I wouldn't employ them end of story. However, if the name has obvious racial conotations such as Singh or Mohammed and I automatically binned those candidates it would be unlawful Racial Discrimination. If anyone can assist by explaining what legislation covers "Unlawful name discrimination" I would be grateful as everyone here seems to think it is unlawful. It is not!
It is arguable that if a candidate was called "Half a leg Heather" and I believed that was because that person had a disability and I chose to bin that candidate because of it, that could be Disability Discrimination.
If I had an application from a Miss Roid, first name Emma or a Mr Janus first name Hugh I would think long and hard about giving them a job. I most certainly would not employ a Michael Hunt.
Reply:I don't think so. My sister is called Z'hane and she got all her jobs fine. I don't think being called shadow would make much difference :) Great choice of name by the way!
Reply:not if they didn't want a law suit if you are qualified and an all around good worker and they don't hire you call a lawyer that's BS and a form of discrimination, #$% that!
and DONT change your name, shadow souds exotic danceresq
Reply:I think that the name "Shadow" makes you sound like a lap-dancer... Besides, a name like that doesn't work too well with surnames. "Mr. Shadow Smith" - Sounds a little silly, no?
That said, having it as a surname "Mr. Bob Shadow" sounds quite cool, and no-one would bat an eyelid.
